Its been a week since Yendi Phillipps was announced as Miss Jamaica Universe 2010, but her crowning is being dogged by controversy. Since her crowning, a fierce debate has ranged online, in the press and in social circles, that this year’s competition was rigged, and that Phillipps was literally ‘promised’ or guaranteed the win.
Long before the coronation show, there were numerous comments that the pageant was a forgone conclusion, and that Phillipps would win. Some argued that she should not have been allowed to enter, as her experience and the fact that she had previously won the Miss Jamaica title, gave her an unfair advantage over the other contestants.
Regardless, the Miss Jamaica Universe organisers have rubbished claims that this year’s competition was rigged, and have pointed to the distinguished panel of judges that made their decision based on Phillipps’ outstanding performance in various areas.
It was hardly a surprise to most, when it was announced last night that Yendi Phillips was Miss Jamaica Universe 2010. The 24 year old, 5′ 10″ tall former Miss Jamaica, was a clear stand out from long before the grand coronation show last night at the Chinese Benevolent Society in Kingston. She has now done what only two other Jamaican beauty queens (Sandra Foster and Christine Straw) have managed to do – copping both the Miss Jamaica Universe and Miss Jamaica titles. During the coronation show last night, Phillips also copped the prize for ‘Most Aware’.

The Grand Coronation of Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 happens this Saturday, July 3, at the Chinese Benevolent Association of Jamaica (176 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6). It will feature performances by ‘certified divas’, Tami Chynn and Tifa. DJ L (of BET’s 106 & Park show) will provide the music.
