Statement published in the print media:

Jamaica’s 25th representative to the Miss Universe pageant was crowned July 3rd as Invyte Productions – the new franchise holder of the Miss Jamaica Universe pageant staged the highly anticipated event at the Chinese benevolent Association in Kingston.

Under the night’s theme “beautiful Jewels of the isle”, each of the 19 finalists wore a sash depicting and intrinsic Jamaican feature. After a night of pure beauty and sophistication the panel of judges selected Yendi Phillipps who wore the sash Miss Jamaica Reggae Vibration as the 25th Miss Jamaica universe to popular audience approval.

The coronation show hosted by Kiki of Rising Stars fame, opened with a dance performance featuring the Miss Jamaica universe finalists. The choreography segued into the contestants introducing themselves in a fashion similar to that of the 2009 Miss Universe pageant held in the Bahamas – indicating to many the international flair that this year’s local installment had. The opening number was soon followed by performances from certified divas Tifa and Tami Chynn.

The stage came ablaze with beauty as the 19 finalists, dubbed the 19 jewels of the isle, strutted in Brazilian swimwear courtesy of Karamba – much to the delight of the cheering audience – each ‘jewel’ with her own audience of jubilant supporters.

The evening gown parade was the next arena of competition. Each ‘jewel’ modeled stunning gowns from Uzuri International – raising the competition to fever pitch.

The top ten was soon revealed; Michelle Daley, Kinberley Sherlock, Phillipa Hogarth, Jheanell Chisolm, Shari-Dee barker, Macheri Samuels, Debbie-Ann Williams, Yendi Phillipps, Chantel Davis and Stacy Sirjue were the lucky ladies who made the cut.

Similar to international pageant norm, host Kiki led each lady in a candid discourse – displaying to the judges that the top ten ‘jewels’ were more than just a pretty face. After deliberations were complete the judges selected their top 5.

Miss Jamaica Flora, Shari-Dee Barker; Miss Jamaica Out of Many, Phillipa Hogarth; Miss Jamaica Heritage, Michelle Daley; Miss Jamaica Dancehall Culture, Chantel Davis, and Miss Jamaica Reggae Vibrations, Yendi Phillipps all made up the final 5. Each of the ladies were given a question from a member of the judging panel and upon answering the judges were once again left to deliberate and collate their scores to select Miss Jamaica universe 2010 while DJ L of BET’s 106&Park kept patrons entertained in the auditorium as they anxiously awaited the results.

Shari-Dee barker and Chantel Davis copped 2nd and 1st Runner up spots respectively and the beautiful Yendi Phillipps was crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2010.

Phillipps also took home the prize for Most Aware while the prize for Most Improved went to Stacey Sirjue. Kimberley Sherlock was awarded the prize for Ultimate Body while Best Smile, Miss Photogenic and Miss Congenial went to Michelle Daley, Shari-Dee Barker and Jamille Chin respectively.

The 25th Miss Jamaica Universe pageant was indeed a success analogous to that of any international pageant. Yendi Phillipps, the 25th Miss Jamaica Universe and the 1st under Invyte Productions will now embark upon a life changing endeavour as she will represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas this summer with the hope of creating history in being our nation’s first Miss Universe.

Today’s Sunday Observer carries a feature on the newly crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2010, Yendi Phillips.

…. newly crowned Miss Jamaica Universe Yendi Phillips looks out over hazy Kingston. Her expression pensive, she’s perhaps reminiscing on her second stint as a national pageant queen. The former Miss Jamaica World joins only two other local beauties — Christine Straw and Sandra Foster — who have worn both crowns,” … more here

Yendi Phillipps - Miss Jamaica Universe 2010Its been a week since Yendi Phillipps was announced as Miss Jamaica Universe 2010, but her crowning is being dogged by controversy. Since her crowning, a fierce debate has ranged online, in the press and in social circles, that this year’s competition was rigged, and that Phillipps was literally ‘promised’ or guaranteed the win.

Long before the coronation show, there were numerous comments that the pageant was a forgone conclusion, and that Phillipps would win. Some argued that she should not have been allowed to enter, as her experience and the fact that she had previously won the Miss Jamaica title, gave her an unfair advantage over the other contestants.

Regardless, the Miss Jamaica Universe organisers have rubbished claims that this year’s competition was rigged, and have pointed to the distinguished panel of judges that made their decision based on Phillipps’ outstanding performance in various areas.

It was hardly a surprise to most, when it was announced last night that Yendi Phillips was Miss Jamaica Universe 2010. The 24 year old, 5′ 10″ tall former Miss Jamaica, was a clear stand out from long before the grand coronation show last night at the Chinese Benevolent Society in Kingston. She has now done what only two other Jamaican beauty queens (Sandra Foster and Christine Straw) have managed to do – copping both the Miss Jamaica Universe and Miss Jamaica titles. During the coronation show last night, Phillips also copped the prize for ‘Most Aware’.

Here are the official Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 results:
1st place – Yendi Phillips
2nd place – Chantel Davis
3rd place – Shari-Dee Barker
4th place – Phillipa Hogarth
5th place – Michelle Daley
