Crowning Of Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 Dogged By Controversy

Its been a week since Yendi Phillipps was announced as Miss Jamaica Universe 2010, but her crowning is being dogged by controversy. Since her crowning, a fierce debate has ranged online, in the press and in social circles, that this year’s competition was rigged, and that Phillipps was literally ‘promised’ or guaranteed the win.

Long before the coronation show, there were numerous comments that the pageant was a forgone conclusion, and that Phillipps would win. Some argued that she should not have been allowed to enter, as her experience and the fact that she had previously won the Miss Jamaica title, gave her an unfair advantage over the other contestants.

Regardless, the Miss Jamaica Universe organisers have rubbished claims that this year’s competition was rigged, and have pointed to the distinguished panel of judges that made their decision based on Phillipps’ outstanding performance in various areas.

Yendi Phillips Is Miss Jamaica Universe 2010

It was hardly a surprise to most, when it was announced last night that Yendi Phillips was Miss Jamaica Universe 2010. The 24 year old, 5′ 10″ tall former Miss Jamaica, was a clear stand out from long before the grand coronation show last night at the Chinese Benevolent Society in Kingston. She has now done what only two other Jamaican beauty queens (Sandra Foster and Christine Straw) have managed to do – copping both the Miss Jamaica Universe and Miss Jamaica titles. During the coronation show last night, Phillips also copped the prize for ‘Most Aware’.

3rd place – Shari-Dee Barker
4th place – Phillipa Hogarth
5th place – Michelle Daley

Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 Grand Coronation – July 3

The Grand Coronation of Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 happens this Saturday, July 3, at the Chinese Benevolent Association of Jamaica (176 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6). It will feature performances by ‘certified divas’, Tami Chynn and Tifa. DJ L (of BET’s 106 & Park show) will provide the music.

Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 Will Be Bigger & Better Than Ever Before

This year, the Miss Jamaica Universe pageant celebrates its 25th anniversary, and plans are afoot for the Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 pageant to be bigger and better than ever before. Here are some of the plans for this year’s Miss Universe:

All Star Weekend – it will be a full weekend of top notch events featuring several international and local celebrities including multi-Grammy award-winning artistes
Launch party at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Friday, July 2
Grand coronation show at the National Stadium (taking it back to the glory days of the past when it was a national event) on Saturday, July 3
After-party on Sunday, July 4
Prize package that’s ‘fit for a queen’ – Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 will walk away with a J$1 million cash prize, a car valued between J$3 million and J$4 million, make-up courtesy of Face Forward, free travel courtesy of Skylan Airlines, a complete wardrobe, among other prizes. The high school that the 2010 Miss Jamaica Universe winner attended, will also receive $1 million in aid of their building fund. Notably, every contestant who places in the top 10 will likely receive endorsement deals along with other prizes. All contestants will also receive discounts and benefits from the various Miss Jamaica Universe sponsors
Contestants will be trained – all the Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 contestants will be trained by experts in the various fields of beauty and pageantry, including media, speech, poise and etiquette
