Carolyn Yapp, a 25 year old Interior Designer, was crowned last night as Miss Jamaica Universe 2009 at a private coronation that was attended by the family and friends of the contestants, as well as producers and organizers from Pulse – licensees for the Jamaica preliminary to the Miss Universe beauty pageant. First runner-up was Fallon Harris – a 21 year old student at the University of the West Indies and fashion model – while the third runner-up spot went to budding model, singer and designer, 19 year old Krystina Black.
Last night’s coronation took place at The Refuge, at Villa Ronai in Stony Hill (St. Andrew), and the judges were:
1) Barry Moncrieffe, former principal dancer of the NDTC and fashion designer
2) Gilou Bauer, Curator of the Mutual Life Gallery
3) Lois Lake-Sherwood, artist, business executive and diplomat
The decision to proceed with the 2009 edition of the Miss Jamaica Universe pageant was an almost last-minute decision, as Pulse had given up the license earlier this year, but the Miss Universe Organization were able to convince them to run the contest and produce a Miss Universe 2009 entrant.
As Miss Jamaica Universe, Carolyn now has the opportunity to represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe pageant before a worldwide audience of close to one billion persons. She is the daughter of Jean and Hartley Yapp, and is originally from Montego Bay, but currently residing in Kingston, Jamaica. She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, and also did post graduate studies in Interior Design in the U.S. (Florida).
The 2009 Miss Universe finals will be held in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009. Now in its 58th year, the glamorous event, features some of the world’s most beautiful women from 85 countries, with each contestant competing for the right to call herself the most beautiful woman in the world. We wish Carolyn best of luck!
