24-year-old investment banker, Kerry Baylis, last night joined an elite shortlist of just four Jamaican beauties who have worn both the Miss Jamaica World and Miss Jamaica Universe crowns, as she was crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2013 at the Jewel Resort in St. Ann. Baylis was Miss Jamaica World in 2009.
Baylis beat 10 rivals in the Uzuri International-promoted event, and will represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe final in Russia, on November 6. The other finalists who made it to the top 5 were Salomie Campbell, Chantal Davis, Monique Brady and Kashema Scarlett. Sectional prizes went to Baylis for Most Aware and Best in Swimsuit, and to Salomie Campbell for Best in Evening Wear.
As just the fourth beauty to take the Miss Jamaica/Universe double, Baylis joins the ranks of her predecessors Sandra Foster, Christine Straw and Yendi Phillips.
According to reports, there will be no Miss Jamaica Universe 2013 pageant. The final was scheduled for Emancipation Park in St Andrew on Sunday, July 14, however Dimitris Kosvogiannis – holder of the local franchise since 2011 – announced yesterday evening that the event is off.
In what seemed to be a letter of resignation as the franchise holder, Kosvogiannis reportedly said: “Due to ongoing professional obligations, which require significant commitments outside Jamaica, we believe the interests of Miss Universe and Miss Universe Jamaica would be best served by someone exclusively committed to the organisation, recruitment, and production of the pageant.”
